er, whoops
... and I just realized that I had temporarily locked down commenting in my lj to shut off a wave of spammers, and never remembered to unlock it. *facepalms*

But at least it is snowing fluffily outside!

Heh, and I actually had a whole long comment typed out for the entry too.

The short part of it being, "well, see if you can edit the next printing and change it to some cluster of islands between England and Africa." Then I actually looked up what box-hauling was and was going to comment about whether or not that was different from wearing and which term should be used for a dragon transport and whether or not one would even bother trying to tack a dragon transport in the middle of big open ocean, given that they're so unwealdy, but about halfway through I realized I read way too much naval fiction but have never actually sailed a square-rigged vessel (I *have* sailed a fore-and-aft rigged schooner) so I probably don't know, anyway.

Long story short: I love dragons! I love ships!

You have snow? You lucky, lucky thing. We have cold, wet rain here.

I hope you have a very merry christmas. Last year my mum loved getting your books as a present, they helped her as she recovered from Chemo. Keep up the good work, I love your writing :D

Horray for snow. You should see my Corgis jumping through two solid feet. :)

I was going to say in the other post that I've seen far, far worse things make it to print. If you want a laugh, here's a recent art cover editorial blunder someone showed me: http://failblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/fail-owned-three-handed-fail.jpg

The person who drew that probably thinks the Horn of Africa has something to do with Gondor.

Our cold snap has now turned into a warm spell so hopes are failing for a white Christmas here.

Ah so that's why. Did wonder if you'd been trolled or something.

Er I noticed the error too but thought it was my bad geography instead!

I hope you will still respect me if I say I didn't notice... although I am noticing the snow.

Hey, you know, your books are good in French TOO? I am slowly reading them in French because I know them well enough in English to get by and actually pick up some painless education.

I hope things are going well enough for your characters on the fatal shore, and for you wherever you shovel.

Hi,

Sorry if it was strange to get that interview request from me via OTW. I'll send it through proper, snail-mail channels if I must; it's just a habit I have of trying speedier, electronic communications first. ;) I would never have survived had I been born during Temeraire's time as I would surely have died holding my breath for the post.

D____d Spammers!
[info]vespican
2008-12-20 08:24 pm UTC (link)
Well, let's see! The original Spam was from ham. Perhaps there is a way to convert internet Spammers into hogs and hope they find themselves in the world where Temeraire and his kind live. I'm sure he would enjoy a tasty pig now and then. As discerning a creature as he is, I'm sure he'd appreciate a bit of variety in his diet.

Anyway, a lot of the fun in reading peoples' live journals is to review the comments. I'm glad to see that we will once again be able to do that with yours. (And comment ourselves upon occasion.)

By the way, while your work is sold as Fantasy, and on your website you call it Historical Fantasy, do you write it as fantasy? Or do you consider it to be historical fiction, or perhaps even naval adventure?

Speaking of snow, "they" told us to expect 8 to 12 inches. We got over twenty by the time it let up. Really made a mess of the roads. The only saving feature was that it was a cold snow. It doesn't pack that well, so vehicles bust through it easier than they would if it was wetter. I hope that whatever amount you get, that it doesn't mess up the roads and driving all that much.

Quite possibly you are right. However Temeraire surely has some dragon acquaintances who would devour whatever was offered to them. There may be some who take offense at whatever inconvenience, insult, or injury these d_____d spammers perpetrated on Ms. Novik, and would partake of these low lifes regardless of any lack of flavor!

Nothing but endless torrentual downpours with a chance of last minute shoppers. I only wish we had snow down here, at least for christmas. Hopefully the ski resort we'll be vacationing at will provide plenty of that during our new year trip!

Snow is awesome^^
I was really hoping for a white Christmas this year, seeing how cold it was getting, but no. No White Christmas, yet again.

I hope you don't mind me adding you as a friend. I have read all of Temeraire series and I am in love with it! I love your writing style and it fascinates me so deeply. I have recommended the book to many of my friends who in turn, loved it as much as I do.

I was not aware of your livejournal until now and I hope you won't mind me adding you as a friend.

And I hope you had a Merry Christmas and also wishing you a Happy New Year.

I think I'd rather have clues than spoilers per se. That way I can place mental bets with myself as to whether or not I've figured them out correctly, to be settled when the next book comes out.

I just finished His Majesty's Dragon, and discovered you have a livejournal, so I thought I would drop you a quick comment.

I loved your book, and am waiting for Throne of Jade to come in at the library right now. I said to a friend that HMD was the book I'd been waiting my whole life for (dragons! Royal Navy! Napoleonic Wars!), and it was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. I'm pretty terrible at comment-writing but I just want to thank you for writing such an amazing book, with I am sure equally amazing sequels. So, thank you very much.

Maybe YOU don't want to cast - but your FANS might...
[info]glreidaz
2009-02-24 10:22 pm UTC (link)
OK, so maybe no author wants to dispute casting with Peter Jackson - but I'll bet the fans would like to have their say. So, we have the entire Temeraire series on Storycasting.com where the fans can select a "fantasy cast" using current film and TV stars. I don't know enough British-sounding actors to cast this one effectively myself, but I'm sure the other fans have some ideas. So, blog about us, and SEND THEM. (Patrick Rothfuss, of The Name of the Wind, did this in late November, and we had 1200 hits in 3 days, and still have his fans showing up to cast). Someone has already posted a cast for volume 1 (Clive Owen as William, Lucy Lawless as Jane), so I expect the fans to have a lot to say about those choices alone. I'm looking forward to the real movie, but until then, this is a lot of fun!

First may I say that I love your Temeraire series. Of the five books I have read (and own) I must say that 'His Majesty's Dragon' and 'Black Powder War' are my favourites.

However, having just finished 'Victory of Eagles' I am delighted that my two favourite dragons are going on together BUT did anyone proof read the paperback before publishing it?? (HarperVoyager edition).

Please keep up the good work!
