book iz launched \o/
I have just staggered back in from the launch party for Victory of Eagles and Fifty-to-One, which went smashingly, and return here to the happy news that some have sighted it in the wild. Yay!

^ Above sentence written last night, proving to be as much as I could manage before I gave up on the internets and went to sleep.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the book, either here (so warning for spoilers in the comments!) or on Amazon/bn.com/etc, if you want to link me to your reviews, even if you are not as nice to me as [info]rmartin101 was in the comments on the last post. :D

I also abuse your flists a little bit to bring you shiny cover art:

I am still racing around today as the excitement continues with a reading/signing tonight at the Barnes & Noble in Greenwich Village (7:30pm at 8th Street and 6th avenue, for any of you NYC types who can make it). Now I must go time myself so I don't put everyone to sleep with the droning three-hour reading of doom or whatnot, eep.

Well, that was surprisingly... intense. I am saddened to see how little interest Laurence has spent for Temeraire as their interplay was what I enjoyed most about the first novel. This is similar to the change I have noticed in Steven Brust's novels. Initially in Jhereg, whose lead character's familiar I am named after, there was a great deal of interplay between Loiosh and Vladimiar.

It is only in his most recent book (coming almost on the same day as yours) that he spent the time again to give the Familiar voice and delight with their interplay.

I am glad to see that they do pick up some discussion. It is interesting to notice how Temeraire has picked up Laurence's quirk in withholding discussions save when dealing with other dragons.

Put a reserve into Borders. Hopefully will be able to pick it up later today! So happy this is coming out right now, my run through of the current Discworld series is almost finished and I need something else to drool over!

I just finished it, having had it on pre-order with Amazon, and being a Prime member it was delivered the day it was due to be released.

It was a smashing good read, and I enjoyed being brought into Temeraire's and Laurence's world once more, but . . . I was dissatisfied with the ending. I can't say any more without putting in spoilers so I will leave it at that.

My wife brought me back an ARC from work for Father's Day, because she knew I liked the series so much! I read it in just two days - which is a record-breaking event for me these days. I honestly think it's the best book you've written yet; the storytelling and the overall pacing are much tighter than previous stories, and your skills at characterisation (particularly of the dragons, new and old) are as splendid as ever. I really liked the twists and turns the story took, and you really had me guessing at certain points during the story. Thanks for a wonderful read!

I have not only seen copies of it in the wild, but I have captured two of them -- one for my child & one for my best friend (still on the hunt for a third copy for myself :-) ). I am so excited about this!

I can't wait til this weekend, when my child & I have plans to settle down & read our copies side by side (she just finished rereading the first three (for the third time)).

...I ask and I shall receive!

Okay. *stares off into space, contemplatively* Where to start...

Jane's notation about "uh, Laurence, we were totally going to sneak it over there and not get ourselves executed, you moron" hit like a gutpunch - Laurence's point of view is so strong, and so aboveboard, that it really comes as an intense shock to hear about the eminently more practical method Jane intended to employ. In that she was far more enraged that Laurence wrote her, essentially, a lover's note and not a subordinate's read absolutely perfectly, as did her severing of the relationship.

Laurence's total and abject misery throughout this book was absolutely palpable, and at times made uncomfortable reading. When he hit his nadir, with the 'no quarter' raiding, I really wanted to curl up into a miserable little ball. I felt what he was going through, and that he didn't expect anything better; couldn't get himself out of it because he was too sunk in despair and self-punishment. It was horrifying, seeing how the humans all got worn down by the terribleness of this. I wanted to hug Tharkay for getting him out of it in that inimitable Tharkay fashion. (And may I mention that I loved each and every one of his cameos? He's absolutely one of my favorite characters.) I just about wept at the end of the second section, and how that led up to Laurence's... not suicidal tendencies, but worse.

Temeraire's lack of understanding of the nuances of what he's gotten himself into and the consequences of his actions bring fresh shock and horror to each new discovery. (Celeritas -! ;_; ) One forgets about all the repurcussions until they make themselves known again.

This is totally not my era, and so I can't say with any authority that Wellesley was handled 'right,' but he was certainly handled well, if that makes sense. The... deliberate brutality because war is brutal and one must be to win it. If that makes sense? - the willingness to do what has to be done and demand what has to be asked. But still, I... I appreciated his understanding of Laurence's protection of the other officers.

...okay, this is probably bad to say, but on a personal level, I still like Napoleon better. (He found a way to repay Laurence whether Laurence would have him do it or not. I'm not surprised. Sorry, Laurence, I know you didn't want him to, and it caused a whole lot of trouble, but...)

I do have to ask, though - is this the end? I can't possibly think of anything that could top it, though Lien and Napoleon are still around. My summarization of this book to everyone - pardon the vulgarity - has been 'NAPOLEON F****** INVADES F****** ENGLAND!!' and it's hard to top that. (I have the thought that my ignorance of this era is going to make this statement totally ridiculous. Oh, well.)

I don't think that Jane intended to employ that method as much as she assumed that someone would, and that it would happen sometime soon. Other than that I agree with 'bout everything you said.

Amazon came through, and I had it in my hands last night.

Unfortunately, "Fall With Honor," by another of my favorite authors with an LJ (well favorite authors, period) was released a week ago, but Amazon was not on the ball with that one, and it also arrived yesterday.

I promised eeknight I would read it first and get a review up, but I am well into it, and you are next on the docket.

I have to get to VoE quickly, because there's a line of folks waiting for it!

I am steadfastly not looking at the comments because Amazon won't be shipping mine until the 14th, for some unknown reason! What shall I do until then?

(I'm serious, I was moping around the house about it last night and my husband told me to get a life! :P Just wanted to let you know how much I'm anticipating it!)

Hope you now feel rested and enjoy everyone's enjoyment of the book. Thanks so much for this fantastic series!
