Eddie Izzard and regency dancing
Sadly, all these two things have in common is that the first is keeping me from the second -- I have tix to the Izzard show this Saturday night \o/, and therefore I cannot be at the Regency Assembly at the 92nd St Y. But I wanted to tout it to any of you in the NYC area, selfishly, in hopes it will be a great success and there will be another one I can go to!

There's a workshop from 7-8, then a ball from 8:30 - 11:30, and you get to dress up either in period or formal wear (this is a selling point for me, as I hold there are never enough opportunities to get dressed up) and have period refreshments. Spare Parts (who do a lovely Regency Ballroom CD) are playing, and Susan de Guardiola (who ran the fantastically fun regency dancing at Balticon this year) will be calling the dancing -- she did an amazing job of teaching a roomful of people (most of whom, yours truly included, had not a clue what they were doing) how to do a whole bunch of regency dances.

So if you are in range, whether you are into the period or into interesting dancing, you should totally go and have fun, and I am only sorry I am missing it, though excited to partake of cake or death.

Totally unrelated.

I was thinking about you tonight.

Have you ever heard someone refer to your novels as "Master and Commander of Pern?"

That's what someone called them in my LJ.

Completely jealous of both of those things!

I would pick Eddie, too.

I realize this is kind of a shot in the dark, but. . .speaking of the Balticon Regency Dance, I believe you took a picture of me (dark green corset over long-sleeved black shirt, and ankle-length dark green skirt) there. Assuming you kept it and it doesn't show me drooling and cross-eyed, is there any chance I could obtain a copy?

Do you know, usually my cameraphone photos are a 50/50 success rate, but this one came out! So here you are -- let me know when you have it and I'll take it down so it is not hanging out there in public. :)

I enjoyed the Eddie Izzard myself when he came through Boston. (Although it was THAT that prompted me to say to my boyfriend, "You know, the next time George Carlin comes through, we should see him, before he retires or something." So I blame Eddie Izzard for George's untimely demise.)

Oh, I didn't know that you like period dance! I do English country dance, which is like Regency but more fun a little less formal; a lot of people who go to Susan's Regency workshops also do ECD. It's just ended for the summer but starts up again in September (we dance in a church hall that has no air conditioning). It's every Tuesday evening down in the West Village. If you're interested and ever have Tuesdays free fall/winter/spring I would be thrilled to drag you along.

Well, you see, it is not so much something I am interested in doing regularly -- it is more the idea of getting all dressed up for a night at an Assembly ™ a la Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. *g*

Ahh, gotcha. My ECD group has an annual ball where there is marvelous dressing up and so forth, but it's members-only, and there's a lot of focus on learning the dances beforehand and it being a Dance Event. Fortunately I love dancing even more than I love dressing up (though it's a close thing!).

???more fun??? walking around? Spinning swings that have no flow?

"Less Formal"? please explain.

Formal in dress? Not required but requested. Some of us do wear era appropriate clothing, including the starched cravat. And we enjoy the dance very well, thank you.

Formal, as in actually dancing with the era correct footwork, era appropriate music, era appropriate set movement? That is what makes this Regency dance, not ECD.

The entire point of an Assembly is to do these things. If not we could call it "English country 'dance'. dress up if you really feel like it."

Pardon me; I meant no offense.

Sounds like we're in agreement.

Sorry you missed the event--it was so fantastically fun. We had a number of beginners (some with almost no dance experience) and both beginners and experienced dancers were on the floor pretty much all night having a blast! Great costumes, good food, nice site. All in all a wonderful time!

As a professional public historian it is such a treat to step into the past at events like the Regency Assembly. I love just to dance (and do plenty of non-historical dance for the rest of the year), but each added historically correct detail just makes it that much better. To wear my dress (which is based on an actual period dress) and to know that I am doing the same dances with the same steps, to the same sort of music that they would have circa. 1810-1820 is just magical.

I believe another Assembly is in the works for next summer at the YMCA and of course there is the October Assembly in New Haven as well.

We saw Eddie when he came through Dallas on this tour. He was great. My favorite bit involved giraffes playing charades.

Oh I am incredibly envious of people who can go to an event like this. Unfortunately I live too far away to make it. Around here the closest thing you get to costuming is people running around with Mickey Mouse heads on.

Eddie is one of the gods of my comedic pantheon (has been since I first saw him in SF), so I would be hard pressed to choose most anything over our favorite "male tomboy." It is weird seeing Eddie and Minnie in "The Riches" though. Definitely a change of pace.

Gah! Am so jealous! I would love to go to a Regency Assembly - get all frocked up and pretend I was at Almack's *sigh* Only finished re-reading Friday's Child a few days ago, so the whole idea sounds so appealing. But Eddie Izzard would be pretty darn good too.

I'd just like to mention that you and Temeraire take front page on the My Borders Monthly newsletter this month. Anyone who's subscribed to the Sci-Fi & Fantasy portion of the newsletter will see this! :D I intended to forward the newsletter but don't have an email address. That's alright. I'm just glad you're getting even more publicity.

Meant to post the text of the newsletter. There's links to the books, excerpt, and authors.

dragons, tattoos & Vlad

The dragon Temeraire and his master find themselves separated in Victory of Eagles, the fifth book of Naomi Novik's Napoleonic-era series. Their quest to reunite and protect Great Britain from Napoleon's ever-threatening forces is as captivating as the previous books in the series. Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings movie-making fame recently optioned the series for film. In The Iron Hunt, the first novel in Marjorie M. Liu's new series, demon hunter Maxine Kiss is inked with tattoos that have minds of their own. Throw in a defining moment, a defining man, and menacing demons for fantastic summer reading. Swashbuckling hero Vlad Taltos faces elimination and seeks protection from an alien people, his own, in Jhegaala. Steven Brust's storytelling is as wry and gritty as ever.

Just completed Victory of eagles, and it was the best book by far. I do not know how I received it prior to July 8th but on friday B&R called, and said come get it. If you are a fan you can imagine how excited I was. I Will not say anymore, because I do not want to spoil the book. All I can say or ask is; will there be more Temeraire will he get his capital, and how soon?

Naomi if you have a drawing that is a representation of how Temeraire looks to you, I would love to see it. I want a tattoo of a Dragon and there is no better then he.

A huge congratulations on the release of your 5th book :)

I'm on the other side of the world - so I'm having to wait a little longer to get it (but I've ordered it, and apparently it's already in the post!! yay!)

to fill in the wait I've been re-reading books 1 to 4.

Could I ask a question about book 3...
I still don't really understand WHY Lenton sent the letter to Laurence, when they knew he was in China, and they had no idea if things had been sorted out there.

Best of luck with your book tour - I hope you have a great time (and don't wear yourself out).
cheers
