thank you, and passing along the Interfictions auction!
So first I have to say a huge and belated thank-you for all the lovely birthday wishes ♥, and also to reassure: you have not missed the first chapter of Victory of Eagles! I am impatiently waiting for a pretty and nicely typeset PDF file from my editor, which I am assured is on its way any day now. (This will be going out on the Temeraire mailing list, which you can join/leave whenever you like at www.temeraire.org, and I will announce and post here afterwards as well.)

I would also like to point you all to the extremely shiny jewelry auction currently underway to benefit the Interstitial Arts Foundation, the publishers of Interfictions. Fabulous stuff for a fabulous cause! (You can also subscribe to [info]iafauctions to follow the auction as new pieces are added one by one.)

Life has been a little mad lately mostly for very fun reasons, particularly because I ended up with three separate theater dates in six days -- the one I had planned, and the two unexpected sets of birthday presents. My verdicts: Macbeth: director Rupert Goold & Patrick Stewart both brilliant, see this if you possibly can. Rent: great dancing and fun energy, but badly over-amplified. Dangerous Liaisons: fabulous costumes and a Valmont I actually believed in as a seducer, some v. clunky dialogue in bits, rape scene extra-creepy because Cécile didn't feel like a period character.

Then there was the Cinco de Mayo get-together and the lunch with family and the planning for the Victory of Eagles launch and tour and somewhere in there there's been some OTW meetings, and recruiting another twenty coders and another forty revisions committed to the archive code, and finishing a short story (set in the past of the Temeraire universe, for Gardner Dozois's upcoming DRAGONS anthology), and hours watching david cook performances on youtube, don't mock me, and at the end of it all there is a slightly enervated me. *forms puddle and quivers*

And on that note, I will now go to bed before it hits 4am, oh dear.

Happy birthday!

Not being able to see Patrick Stewart in Macbeth is pretty much the only cause I've had to be sad about having moved to Seattle a year ago. I'm still trying to figure out a way to rearrange the fundamental laws of the universe and finances such that I have money for plane tickets and time to fly across the country. While I do have friends who would be more than happy to let me crash on their couches, it's just not going to happen. *sigh*

Looking forward to reading the first chapter of Victory!

Thanks so much for mentioning the IAF auction. I am full of admiration for the beauties to be found there.

Cecile was too utterly 20th C, wasn't she? I wondered that Valmont's redoubtable aunt (the divine Sian "I want to be a goddess, Claudius" Phillips) didn't whack her with her fan. Still, it's a good play and an interesting production.

I fully intended to comment and wish you a Happy Birthday, before or on the actual date. But with everything going on in my life, I never did. Therefore, I hope you will accept my after the fact wishes for you to have, and my hopes that you did have a very pleasant and wonderful Birthday!

Okay - I'm usually a well-hidden (depending on the place and circumstance) uber-geek...but I do not know who David Cook is, so I guess I have to go have a trip to YouTube. Glad your birthday was good and you're having fun!

*update* Okay - I looked up David Cook and it now makes sense that I don't know who he is as I'm not an American Idol fan. But I will take a look at some of the YouTube vids when I get home...

Ms. Novik - I am DELIGHTED to find you on LJ and beyond thrilled to know I have 3 more Temeraire novels to look forward to (and it seems another is in the works?)! I've just finished His Majesty's Dragon, which I cannot rave about enough, and I am completely looking forward to reading more of your work.

Well done!

Hi Naomi! I'm really looking forward to Victory of Eagles - I just adore Temeraire (thank god for LibraryThing, or I might never have discovered your wonderful series.)

I don't know if you're familiar with Gaia Online (http://www.gaiaonline.com/) but it would be extremely thrilling if you were to promote Victory of Eagles there when it comes out. Today we had Meg Cabot promoting her book, Airhead, and in the past we had Michael Scott, author of The Alchemyst doing a promotion.

I think it would be a really wonderful opportunity for you to gain some great exposure and with Gaia's fantasy origins I know your books would appeal to a lot of people there.

I hope you don't mind me posting this suggestion in your journal. I love Gaia and I love your work, and it would be really exciting to see them come together. :)

Anlina

Thanks Naomi, for the reassurance regarding the much anticipated First Chapter :) I'm both looking forward to and almost dreading finding out what poor Laurence's fate is going to be - I don't think I've had such affection for a fictional character since Frodo or Harry Potter!

Hello Naomi;

I realize this probably isn't the best of places to ask, but I was wondering about contacting you. I'm one of the organizers of a local convention and I saw on temeraire.org that you tend to go to fan-run conventions, and we'd love to invite you as a guest. Could I contact you with an invitation (other than here of course) by email or somesuch?

The convention is called Geek.Kon and we have a nice website, geekkon.net

Thanks!

Hey Naomi, Whiz again - please let us know ASAP if you'll be at the San Diego Comic Con. I was there the last couple of years (can't believe I missed you in '06), but I'm thinking of skipping it this year to avoid the crowds. If you'll be there, though, I'll go! You can also get in touch with me at Whiz2005 at cox dot net.

Last I heard, Naomi WAS scheduled to be at San Diego Comic Con this year. I know she's really busy, but I thought it was part of her VoE book tour. ;) Hopefully she'll be able to pull away from her hectic schedule soon to verify this.

Hello there (Naomi? or it is Ms. Novik? xx;)! I just wanted to drop in and say that my best friend introduced me to your books (I believe her words were: it's like Patrick O'Brien with DRAGONS; hence, I caved)and both me and my mom are hooked! :) Looking forward to Victory of Eagles. ^^ You write brilliantly. Your world is amazing.

Hi Naomi, new reader here. I'd just like to say thanks for lending significant distraction from real life over the past few weeks while I've been reading your books. They've been incredibly enjoyable to read and now I find myself anxiously awaiting the next instalment. My favourite feature of the books is the particular way the dragons have of speaking - with such a child-like quality and yet with such great intelligence! I could just imagine Temeraire picking apart the Bible the way you described: 'But, Laurence, how could the snake have said anything when snakes cannot talk?' etc. I also find myself wanting to read a Temeraire-verse book set in 2008. *imagines enormous computers with keys made for dragon claws*
Anyway, you are added, and believe me I'll be around ;)
-Andy

Hey, dropping you a note so that my friending you won't seem entirely random, but your name came up more than once this weekend at Wiscon and it just seems like I oughtta. Among other things, I'm a Brown alum, too, and people in I know through fanfic and pro sf/f communities have been recommending I read your books. I think I've probably read some of your fic, even. I missed the panel on the OTW at Wiscon bc of a conflict, but I remain interested and fascinated.

Anyway, hi. *waves*

Well, I just finished the Temeraire books, mostly because I work at a library, someone checked them in all at once, and I'd been meaning to get them for awhile.

Since I am a big alternate history fan, that's what caught me first, and that's what inspired a niggling little question.

So, at some point, I think when they were musing about why the promised 20 dragons weren't showing up to reinforce the Prussian army, and one of the theories was that the British had been attacked by or had attacked the American colonies, and something was said about recovering them.

So, apparently, the US colonies are independent... in some form. But what form? With a strong Incan empire in the south; and strong Native Americans armed with dragons (apparently the Lost Colony of Roanoke was destroyed by dragons this go-round?) how many colonies are there independent? Are they united or a bunch of little nations? Perpetually warring against or allied with the Native Americans and the Incas in specific. What happened with smallpox and its effects on the Native Americans?

And what goes with the War of 1812? Are American sailors being impressed? Do the British still occupy territory in the northwest, supposed to be ceded to us? Does Andrew Jackson still stare lustfully south at Florida?

What's happening? It's driving me crazy, and I fear you won't be heading that way in the next book, though it's possible.

(And yeah, there might've been a better route for this little missive, but I couldn't find any contact info but this thing on your site.)

I've just read the first chapter of Victory of Eagles on your site. I'm afraid to say much, at loathe to spoil, but it was every bit as charming and thrilling as I'd hoped. My already significant appetite for the book has been well and truly whetted. (Here's hoping that this time around, my B&N stocks it right away...)

Yours in anticipation,
Michal S.

Yay! Chapter One is brilliant! I cannot wait for the rest of the book - I'm dying to see how the guys get out of this mess.

I also want to hear from the rest of the formation, what they think of what L & T did (and sacrificed) to save all the other dragons from the plague. I just know they will all be on their side.

Poor T!! Locked up & forced to mate - how terribly cruel. I often wondered about the breeding grounds, what kept them there, what they were all like etc. Looking forward to seeing how that all develops as well.

And Laurence - still fighting! Yay!

Thanks for sharing & whetting our appetites!!!
