pirate ships, deadlines, conventions
Going straight from one much-extended deadline to another, I have managed (with much indulgence from the editors) to get my story in for Fast Ships, Black Sails, Ann & Jeff VanderMeer's pirate anthology from Night Shade books, full of fabulous piratey goodness from many amazing writers, including fellow lj'ers [info]matociquala and [info]truepenny!

My own story is "Araminta, or, The Wreck of the Amphidrake" (cough, please ignore the multiple signs of title indecision you might find littered across various mentions of the anthology -- either I have a title when I start or I wrestle with it for ages afterwards). I had really a ridiculous amount of fun writing this; in my own head it was a mix of Georgette Heyer, those old Sinbad movies with the stop-motion monsters, and Orlando. (Whether any of this got onto the page you'll have to tell me if you read it. *g*)

I am currently doing the last real edits on Victory of Eagles (well, okay, what I have mostly been doing is re-reading all Heyer's regency romances in a fit of post-book laziness, but edits are also getting done), and then I have a whole seventeen months before my deadline for book 6. \o/ I have been working on a Temeraire book nonstop since I started His Majesty's Dragon in January 2004, so now it feels like glorious vistas of playtime stretch out before me! Thanks to various spurts of procrastination over the last few years, I have the beginnings of a couple short stories, a screenplay, and three novels -- the hard part is going to be choosing what to work on. *dances*

Meanwhile, I am going to be at Norwescon in Seattle from March 19-23, New York Comic-Con April 18, and Balticon May 23-25, and then, gulp, apparently there is a book tour up ahead. *quivers in fear* I don't have details yet but it will probably involve hitting San Diego Comic-Con. More news to come!

The first chapter of Victory of Eagles will go out over the Temeraire mailing list (signup on the website) and be posted here soon as copyedits are done, so look for it probably the week after I get back from Norwescon.

whee!

Whoo-hoo! Look at you go! \o/

BTW, I got P. to read His Majesty's Dragon after much badgering -- P. doesn't read fiction AT ALL, understand. Well, he's just ripped through the first three books over the past month, and is finishing up Empire of Ivory now, and he's madly in love with it all and can't wait for the next book. Just thought you'd like to know. (:

Whee! You'll be at Balticon! And I'm happy to hear you'll have a break, but dang. Many months for us after devouring the next Temeraire.

Looking forward to Victory of Eagles.

I have to ask-- I'd been trying to get in touch with you via your publisher's public relations guy, and though I got a reply to my first email, never heard back on the second. So I figure, what the heck: I'll ask you directly.

What are the odds we might see you at Dragon*Con? We'd love to have you as a guest at Weyrfest. Anne McCaffrey's slated to be there this year, and I can imagine that a McCaffrey-Novik panel could potentially reach critical mass of Awesome.

I'm sure you'll probably be running around like a crazy person come Labor Day weekend, but I had to throw it out there. Because, obnoxious: it's what I do.

oh, thanks so much -- but alas, no dragoncon for me this year. I have learned my lesson after wiping myself out in '06, five events a year is my limit. I'm skipping Worldcon too. But I'd love to do next year. :)

I cannot wait to meet you at Balticon this year. My one goal last year was to meet you and it's the one thing I didn't get to do. So when they were looking for a liason I jumped at the chance!! I'm so looking forward to the next book, too!

Taking over the world, one reader at a time.

I'm not sure if you knew, but there was an entry entitled "Tien Lung the Celestial Dragon" in the Mummers Day Parade here in Philadelphia on New Year's Day. I did a little dance of glee. It was quite cute. The dance, I mean.

Oooh you are a Heyer fan too!

She's been my favourite "Romance" author mainly because I like my romance full of plot and comedy too.
"These Old Shades" and "The Devil's Cub" are my favourites.

"in my own head it was a mix of Georgette Heyer, those old Sinbad movies with the stop-motion monsters, and Orlando."

It sounds FANTASTIC! (but then, I loved Orlando and also most bad-sfx-critters).

I was wondering if you consider yourself a history nerd/buff/geek-whichever, or a fantasy nerd/buff/geek-whichever, or neither or both.

Yay for book 5 - just reading Empire of Ivory at the moment. My son whipped through it and told me I was gonna hate the ending - so I'm sorta going slow right now. :o\

He got all excited to hear Peter Jackson is doing the movie. *dances* I'm hoping he'll get it - look what he did with Rings, the movie has a good chance of staying true to the story if he does it.

Thank you for writing such wonderful books - so wonderful in fact that my 15 yo son and I have the books in common to discuss now. I tried to get him into Anne McCaffrey - but he's just not interested - though he has read and re-read all four Temeraire's a couple of times now.

Oh - and if you have any say in who plays Lawrence in the movie - my vote is for Ioan Gruffudd. ;o)

I can picture Ioan Gruffudd as William Laurence. In a little bit of artistic license, should the movie(s) reach the point as depicted in EMPIRE OF IVORY, I can see Ioan also reprising his role as Wilberforce (Amazing Grace). Perhaps Temeraire could remark upon the very similar appearance of Laurence and Wilberforce!
Whoever does end up in the role, I'm looking forward to the film versions of the stories.

LOL! Oh, that would be so Temeraire to notice that. :-)

Question for Naomi: has anyone ever done a sketch of the Allegiance? I've always had trouble picturing exactly where everything is. :-(

I've often wondered about the arrangement/layout of the Allegiance and other dragon transports as well. As one with a long time interest in ships of that era, I can see several problems inherent in building a vessel that big, providing a dragon (flight) deck, and spars and rigging in proportion to propel it. I am sure that it would dwarf Island Expedition, the vessel seen in my little sketch.

Good for you! Make sure to take time for yourself during those sixteen months, and not spend all of it writing (maybe one day...yeah, even that would be too much)

Did you say editing? *bloodcurdling scream*

As someone else already mentioned, why not giveDragon*Con a try? It's over Labor Day weekend, and it would be awesome if it could be part of your book tour. I do the programming for the YA Lit track, and yes, I know you're not YA, but I do love your work. I could put you in touch with the right people.

Respond to this and I'll send you my email if you're at all interested.

I'm going to break the lurking while reading your lj by noting that ironically enough, I have been re-reading (or reading for the first time) all of Georgette Heyer's regencies as well.

I'm so excited Victory of Eagles is done! *Bounces* I'll look forward to reading it. And the pirate short story sounds really cool too. By the way, do you have any idea if all the Temeraire books are going to be out in hardcover with the cool UK map like covers? Because I would love to have a set of those. Sigh. I really like the new black and white covers though. They just got all four out here (I'm in India) and I splurged.

I hope you have an awesome time with all your fun stuff coming up. :)

Naomi -- I blazed through Empire of Ivory, and it was just so, so, SO great. Thank you. I am completely in awe. Your books just get better and better!

Can't wait to read the pirate story! I love piratey goodness :points at icon:.

Good luck on the very well deserved appearances and book tour! YAY! I will cross my fingers that you come somewhere near the Dallas area.

One last thing, and it's completely off topic, but do you like the Scarlet Pimpernel books?
