Empire of Ivory non-spoiler questions and thread
I've added a warning to the last post -- there are a few spoilers in the comments now. Apologies; I entirely encouraged people to post comments on the book and should have thought to make a separate "spoilery" thread, so it's my fault not theirs.

Since there are now spoilers over there already, I'll do the reverse now -- if you would like to post spoilery reviews/questions, let me ask you to do so over there, and keep this thread spoiler-free!

And in that vein, answering some non-spoilery questions:

Empire of Ivory will be released throughout the UK on November 5 of this year -- not a very long wait! The US and UK publishers are planning to keep future releases more close together, as I understand.

Book 5, Victory of Eagles, will be out in the US in Summer 2008, in hardcover, and further books in the series will probably come out about that same time.

On the UK cover art change: I love both the original and new cover styles to bits, personally. I am sad about there being a change, because it spoils my fabulous matching set, but it's not my decision -- cover art is a choice marketing makes.

I *am* very happy that Dominic is doing the covers for all of the Subterranean Press limited editions, which will include Empire of Ivory and I very much hope future volumes also), so there will be at least one complete set with his art, and I hope he'll make those covers available as prints via his website too, as the limited eds are pricey.

(Incidentally, the Subterranean website now has thumbnails up of the really beautiful interior layout.)

Okay -- so again, any non-spoilery stuff, welcome here; spoilers, over there please! I'll do a roundup of spoilery questions in a couple of weeks and answer them in a batch then.

And now back to work. *g*

I feel your pain: the cover of my "The Merchants' War" is more than a wee bit different from it's three series predecessors ... but on the other hand? It could always be worse. They could decide the series wasn't selling, and cancel it. (Right?)

On the one hand, my set will no longer match :-( On the other hand, your publishers have neatly arranged for this to come out just in time for my birthday in November so it's been added to my wish list :-) Yay!

I actually hate the new UK cover designs.

I have the first book in the original UK cover design (nice) and the next two in US editions (okay).

And they're all paperbacks so I'm going to have to wait bloody ages to get the new one in a size that matches the rest - and hope that my favourite bookshop gets the US paperbacks (or will order one for me), so I won't have to have the horrible new UK cover art. (Yeah, I'm picky.)

Bah.

you might like to take a look at abebooks.co.uk - last night they had a few sellers who were offering to ship the US edition over here very reasonably.

That is a really elegant cover. o_o I like it! (We get the US version, though, so. XD Not complaining! They match nicely!)

Does anybody know, when the 4th book will be on sale in German?
I purchased the 3rd last week and can`t wait to get the next one into my hands. ^_^
if it takes too long until it will be released in German I`m going for the english version.

See what you have done to me, you´ve turned me into an addict.... and i love it. *g*

Congratulations on the next book being in hardcover (even if now I have to decide if I want to mess up the matching set of paperbacks or wait longer for Victory of Eagles).

About the book, I'm just going to say that I loved it. About the review from Time on the back cover, however, when my friend picked up my copy and read, "It's like Jane Austen playing Dungeons & Dragons with Eragon's Christopher Paolini," I had to explain that:

A) yes, they must have meant that as a compliment

B) no, it was really not like that and please forget Eragon had ever been mentioned in connection

C) there was no actual connection to Jane Austen of...anything, but that if she like that sort of thing she should try Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

and D) it was really, really good.

(Though now I can't get the image of Jane Austen playing Dungeons & Dragons out of my head and it's very distracting.)

Well, re Jane Austen, I think it's because issues like entailment, the gentry, etc. are associated with the setting of Austen's books for most modern Americans? I agree with you that there is no actual connection to Jane Austen there.

I'm picky on having matching book sets, I believe we get the UK editions here in Aus: They joys of the internet and ordering from overseas get around this.

Yes, I'm willing to pay extra for air-mail shipping to have everything in nice USA edition matching order :} I'm sure something like this can have a future in the marketing area...

I'm sorry if this was asked elsewhere. I JUST got into the series on the advice of a friend after being disappointed with the harry potter series. so far I'm loving it. I was wondering if you know how many books there will be when you are done. I was also wondering if you welcome fan art and if you do, how we could send it to you?

I picked EoI at 2 pm on Friday and finished it by 10 pm on Saturday (in between cooking for 20 and driving 180 miles into the mountains). Boy, that was a blast!

While I don't think more actually happened than in BPW, the narrative gave the sense of more action and more tension, and events followed on each other in ways that, looking back at it, were not unpredictable, but were still surprising. And now I want to go do my own research, to see where the Temeraire-verse diverges from ours with regards to the events of the novel.

Yay book!

Just a thing I thought worth sharing: I'm italian and discovered the first book when it came out here, then saw throne of jade in English and bought it. Well, I don't know how to put it but... the italian version is very bad! It doesn't do justice to your books, book 1 I thought "nice read" book2 I thought "whoa! is this the same author???"

I don't know if it' feasible but perhaps you could try and have them change translator at least for the next books, otherwise they won't receive the attention and appraisal they really (and rightfully) deserve

I bought Empire of Ivory at 4:36 pm on Saturday (according to my receipt), and finished it approximately 9 hours later. That did involve skipping the first bit that I'd already read. Congrats on another great book. :-) This time I had the satisfaction of having figured out in advance pretty much where you were going with it, though the details played out in unpredictable ways. But as for the end of this book, I have no clue whatsoever... except it can't be as dire as it seems, or you wouldn't get a whole book five out of it.

Keep writing!

I ordered my copy on Sept. 27, and just got the note that they've had to go back for more. Did you see that you got the cover illustration on their "Things to Come" flyer?

I trust this is good news for you, though it makes me pine. *pines*

I bought the first three in the US, then moved back to the UK, so I was always resigned to have my covers disrupted. I'm actually kind of glad, since my copy of His Majesty's Dragon was pretty flimsy - large chunks started falling out of the binding, so I'll have to sticky tape it back together at some point!

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. Curse you, Novik! Curse you! *shakes fist*

(And by the way: I was on the prowl for Temeraire art and I stumbled across this beauty. Don't know if anyone's linked you to it yet, but it's pretty friggin' sweet.)

Oh my goodness .... Went back and read the opening chapters of His Majesty's Dragon after I finished Empire. A man and his dragon - you've created two memorable characters with Laurence and Temeraire. Thank you.

But I really need to know when the sneak peek chapter 1 for Flight of Eagles is going to be put up. It's a little thing, I know, but if I read it one sentence a night, I might stretch it out until May.

You may have already said this somewhere, but how do you pronounce 'Temeraire?'

That said, I really enjoyed Empire of Ivory and, though eagerly awaiting Victory of Eagles, think you ended this one in a good place.
