Throne of Jade excerpt
I have spent the last week in jury duty (and am not yet done). I may write about it a bit when it is all over; it has been an inconvenient and yet powerful experience. But I can say right now that words cannot adequately express how devoutly grateful I am for a career that does not require me to get up at 8am on a regular basis.

I have been staggering home every night afterwards and indulging in Oblivion (aptly named at present), without the mental capacity to do much of anything else. However, it is now just two weeks until Throne of Jade comes out, so I have celebrated by putting up a fresh excerpt from the book. Since the beginning of the first chapter is already included at the end of His Majesty's Dragon (and also is a bit spoilery for HMD), I have instead put up a bit of the night battle scene from Chapter 4, which takes place aboard the Allegiance, a dragon transport --

The Allegiance was a wallowing behemoth of a ship: just over four hundred feet in length and oddly narrow in proportion, except for the outsize dragondeck that flared out at the front of the ship, stretching from the foremast forward to the bow. Seen from above, she looked very strange, almost fan-shaped. But below the wide lip of the dragondeck, her hull narrowed quickly; the keel was fashioned out of steel rather than elm, and thickly covered with white paint against rust: the long white stripe running down her middle gave her an almost rakish appearance.

To give her the stability which she required to meet storms, she had a draft of more than twenty feet and was too large to come into the harbor proper, but had to be moored to enormous pillars sunk far out in the deep water and her supplies ferried to and fro by smaller vessels: a great lady surrounded by scurrying attendants. This was not the first transport which Laurence and Temeraire had traveled on, but she would be the first true ocean-going one; a poky three-dragon ship running from Gibraltar to Plymouth with barely a few planks in increased width could offer no comparison.

( Read the excerpt from Chapter 4 )

And to round out the post, this morning I received the spectacular cover art for the UK hardcover edition of Throne of Jade from Dominic Harman -- it's even more beautiful than the cover for Temeraire, I think, and they have done something nifty with the background color for the image -- lovely work.

eeee! reading that excerpt makes me quite eager for Throne of Jade; hopefully my preordered copy will arrive quickly.

I agree, the cover for the UK version is magnificent - it makes me quite happy to know that my copy is pre-ordered and I'll have it to enjoy this summer.

Wow. That's lovely cover art. I can't wait for it to come out.

Though it should probably be noted that my desire to own the hardcover editions does not at all lessen my "instant gratification takes too long" mindset in any way, which means I'm still buying the full paperback series, too.

Expect to be cornered in August and pestered into autographing my copy of Temeraire. *g*

I am possibly entirely too elated that the US is getting this book quite a bit before the UK, because I was not looking forward to waiting for this at allllllll. So yaye!

And OMG that cover is gorgeous; I too wish that the US cover looked like that.

That's a beautiful cover, and I think I'll just have to wait for it - will preorder now, at least.

It amuses me greatly that they used the Guardian's "Quotes are unnecessary" as one of the quotes.

My husband and I were joking that next time around the Guardian review would have to say, "No, seriously, no quotes are necessary!" and they'd have to blurb that, and then the next review would have to be, "WE MEAN IT! NO QUOTES!" etc etc.

Aww! It should be August 7, the same as the UK release date and with the shiny cover, just trade paper instead of hardcover, I *think*. *g*

I spotted the first one on duty (I work at a Chapters book store), read it in five hours, proceeded to dump the book on all four of my roomates, and have egarly been spying on the store orders for news of when we'll be getting the next one. :D M'dear, you have made me thoroughly giddy with this new excerpt, and i'm very VERY glad I have something new to push on the fantasy fans.

Man, if I ever go to the UK, my priority will be to get my hands on copies with their versions of the cover art. They're absolutely gorgeous.

Just got my copy of His Majesty's Dragon today, and I can't wait to sit down for a good wallow. :)

Very nice cover. I especially like what appears to be the shadow of the dragon on the back.

As for jury duty ... good luck. My last stint was quite fortunate. U.S. District Court. Had to be on call for a week, and didn't have to appear once.

Naomi:

I just wanted to stop in and mention that, rather than ordering your book through Uncle Hugo's or Dreamhaven (where it's getting VERY good buzz anyway), I ordered 2 more copies of HMD* via a local independent (Micawber's) that does good business here in Minnesnowda.

I then forced it on one of the store owners, a rabid Patrick O'Brien fan. He was dubious ("I don't," he said, giving me a sideways look, "read science fiction, ever. I appreciate it, but..."), but when I ordered a third copy and told him to read it before he gave it to me, he gave it a try.

He loves it. Gave me back my third copy yesterday, bought his own, bought 10 more for the shop, and is proceeding to hand-sell them to every Patrick O'Brien fan he knows. :)

*I gave my ARC to a pregnant acquaintance to read, and I need one copy for home, one copy for lending, and a copy for my mother for Easter.

Oh the cover is beautiful! Now I'm caught between ordering the US version and having it shipped over to the UK because I want to read it as soon as possible and waiting until the UK version comes out and buying it here with the pretty cover. Ah the dilemma!

btw I just checked my email and found out that I am lucky enough to have won the paperback in the Temeraire newsletter competition so I wanted to say thanks and to reassure you that I'll point you toward my LJ when my review is up :)

Future Temeraire Locale
[info]anne_irwin

This summer I visited a locale that would be perfect for a future Temeraire book when inspiration runs dry.

There's an island off the coast of Denmark in the Baltic Sea called Bornholm. On the north end is a wonderful castle ruin called Hammershus that would be a lovely home for dragons.

Off the coast of Bornholm, even farther out in the Baltic are a pair of tiny islands called Christianso and Frederickso. (The "o" has the slash thingie through it.) They are so incredibly picturesque that you honestly expect a fleet of tall ships to sail into the tiny harbor at any moment.

There's a historical fit too, as the area was frequently attacked by the British navy during the early 1800s, and the islands were an important post in watching the actions of the Russian navy, as well as ships coming out of Sweden and Norway.

That sounds spectacular -- and in fact the opening of book 4 almost took place on the Danish coast. The scene ended up excised, but I have been thinking I might polish it up anyway and post it here once book 3 is out, and now you've given me the perfect location.
